Mythology Club Online: Special Event

Vassilisa the Beautiful

There are stories that carry fire.

The fire that cooks the meal, warms the home, tends the ancestors, carries the stories of millenia and keeps the village alive through the long winter. The fire that must be earned.

This month we gather with Vassilisa the Beautiful, one of the great initiation stories of old Europe. Beneath its familiar images—the cruel stepmother, the dark forest, the mysterious doll, and the fearsome Baba Yaga—lives a profound story of feminine maturation and the making of a fire keeper.

In many traditional cultures, tending the hearth was never merely a domestic task. The keeper of the fire stood in relationship with mystery, nourishment, ancestry, and continuity. The hearth was the living center of the home, and its fire was a gift that required care, devotion, and maturity.

Together we will enter this remarkable story and explore what it might reveal about the ancient pathways of feminine initiation, the wisdom of Baba Yaga, and the responsibilities that accompany the carrying of fire.

As always, we will approach the story not as literature to be analyzed, but as a living being to be encountered—one that still has something to teach those willing to sit beside its flames.

I would love to have you join us as we gather around this story together.
